BHA, the oil-soluble one
Skincare acids come in two families. AHAs (like glycolic acid) dissolve in water, so they work on the skin's surface. Salicylic acid is a BHA - a beta hydroxy acid - and it dissolves in oil. That single chemical difference is the whole story: because pores are lined with sebum (oil), an oil-soluble acid can travel down into them instead of sliding over the top.

A blemish begins when dead skin cells stick together and clog a pore. Salicylic acid is keratolytic - research going back to a classic 1977 study showed it works by loosening the "glue" between dead surface cells, so they release and clear instead of packing tighter. Less packed-in debris, less visible congestion.

Strength isn't everything - context is.
